Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, presents a mixture of modern and
colonial charm. From a 'muddy confluence' a century and a half age to one of
the most progressive cities in South East Asia, Kuala Lumpur strode
confidently into the twenty-first century. No one can imagine all those began
in 1857 for a group of 87 Chinese miners who were in search of tin.
Displaying modernity, the city by no means has disregarded its history. Any
visitor to Kuala Lumpur will be struck by its many historic sites. Merdeka
Square is a picturesque and must-see spot in the city. It is the witness of
Malaysian Independence when the British flag came down and the Malayan flag
was raised in 1957. A 100-meter flagpole, the tallest in the world, is
reared at the southern end of the square majestically flying the national
flag. Citizens host the festive National Day celebration each year on the
square. The impressive and oft photographed Sultan Abdul Samad building near
the square is proud of its unique Moorish architecture and foreboding
clock-tower.
Lake Garden is a green sanctuary nestled deep in the city center with a host
of attractions, many of them unique to the region which makes it becoming
the city's most popular and scenic park. It is home of Malaysian National
Monument, which commemorates the struggle to resist Communist aggression and
those who gave their life in the battle in the 1950s and early 60s.
Originally built in 1965, the National Mosque features marble floors,
reflecting pools, beautiful fountains and a 73-meter high minaret against
the skyline which looks like a partly opened multi-fold umbrella. Mosque
welcomes tourists to visit as long as they wear the appropriate garments.
Women must cover their head and cannot have any "bare" body parts, such as
arms and legs.
Petronas Twin Towers is one of the world's tallest buildings designed by
Argentine-American architect and completed in 1996. It has 88 floors and is
452 meters in height. A 58-meter long overbridge connects tow similar shape
towers at the 41 and 42 floors. Located at the basement of the Petronas Twin
Towers, Suria KLCC Shopping Centre is a shopping paradise.
In Kuala Lumpur, you have a lot of choices about accommodation. If you want
luxurious hotels, Swiss Garden Hotel, Royal Hotel, Federal Hotel and Regent
Hotel are all ideal places to stay and convenient for shopping. There are
also many middling size kl hotels with acceptable price. Although the room is
not as large as grand hotel's, it is equipped with air-condition, shower,
telephone and TV, clean and warm.
